— Anthropometric Data
Representative body dimensions for a Western adult population aged roughly 19–65, in millimetres, at the 5th, 50th, and 95th percentiles for each sex. These are teaching / preliminary-design values — for detailed design use a survey matched to the actual user population (e.g. ANSUR II, CAESAR, or a national survey), and add allowances for clothing, footwear, and posture.
Design Principles
| Principle | When to use |
|---|---|
| Design for the extreme | Clearances (headroom, legroom, access openings) → fit the 95th-percentile male. Reach and force → fit the 5th-percentile female. |
| Design for adjustability | Chairs, work-surface heights, displays, vehicle seats → accommodate the 5th-percentile female to the 95th-percentile male (nominally the central 90%). |
| Design for the average | Only where adjustment is impractical and the cost of a poor fit is low (e.g. a shared counter height). |

Body mass has drifted upward in most populations over recent decades and varies widely by region — verify against current local data before using it for seating, fall-arrest, or structural load design.
Workstation Guidance
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Standing bench — precision work | Work point 50–100 mm above standing elbow height, with elbow support. |
| Standing bench — light assembly | Work surface 50–100 mm below standing elbow height. |
| Standing bench — heavy / force work | Work surface 100–250 mm below standing elbow height. |
| Seated work surface | Roughly at seated elbow height above the floor (seat height + sitting elbow height); provide ≥ 200 mm knee clearance depth. |
| Primary reach zone (seated or standing) | Within ~forward grip reach of the 5th-percentile female; frequent items within ~380 mm of the front edge. |
| Minimum knee clearance under a work surface | Height ≥ 5th-percentile male knee height + clothing (≈ 640–680 mm); width ≥ 510 mm. |
| Walking clearance (single person passage) | ≥ 5th–95th shoulder breadth + clothing; commonly ≥ 560 mm restricted, ≥ 760 mm normal. |
| Standard doorway clear width | ≥ 815 mm (accessibility codes); ≥ 900 mm for equipment / two-way traffic. |
