Decibel (dB) Conversion

Converts between a linear ratio and decibels — dB = 10·log₁₀(P₂/P₁) for a power ratio, or dB = 20·log₁₀(V₂/V₁) for a voltage/amplitude ratio, since power scales with the square of amplitude.

×1 ×2 ×10 ×100 0 dB 3 dB 10 dB 20 dB 0 dB 6 dB 20 dB 40 dB power voltage dB = 10 log(P2/P1) or 20 log(V2/V1)
The same ratio maps to twice as many dB for voltage as for power, since power scales with amplitude squared.
