Via Current Capacity

Approximate current capacity of a plated-through via, treating its plated barrel as a short conductor of cross-sectional area A = π·d·t (drilled diameter × plating wall thickness) in the same IPC-2221 formula used for traces, I = k·ΔT0.44·A0.725. This is a first-order estimate — IPC-2152 provides more refined, test-derived via current curves for precision work.

Current flows through the thin plated copper wall of the via barrel.
